Data Archiving of Controlled Experiments on Pedestrian DynamicsBearbeitenProject DescriptionBearbeitenEnhancing safety of people in public places is one of the main purposes of pedestrian research. Today, there are many occasions where a large number of people gathers in a relatively limited space. Major events related to sport, entertainment, culture, and religion are held all over the world on a regular basis. Also transport infrastructures are often overcrowded exacerbated by the desired increase in use of public transport. To reduce the risk of injuries or even fatalities in large crowds, it is important to understand the basic mechanisms that govern crowd motion or crowd behavior in general and especially in case of an evacuation. This requires reliable empirical data, which can be analyzed to uncover the basic underlying principles. One of the new methods is laboratory experiments under controlled conditions, which can be repeated all over the world and has become more and more important [1]. The increasing number of papers covering experimental investigations on pedestrian dynamics shows the concurrently increasing number of experiments in this area. The experiments allow studying effects like the influence of the cultural background, disabilities, motivation, age or gender on the important quantities in traffic science, i.e., the flow-density relation [2]. To provide the possibility to reproduce findings and to allow further analysis of data extracted from elaborate experiments, sharing this data can push forward the field of pedestrian dynamics. Thus, an open access data archive or an index of freely available data would be a good starting point for experimental studies on pedestrian dynamics. Therefore, the proposed project will build up a comprehensive index and archive of performed laboratory experiments on pedestrian dynamics including links to their data and findings around the world by screening published work and data in papers and also online. For unpublished data, responsible persons shall be asked to provide their data. For this purpose, a data archive platform will be offered for uploading experimental data and its description. With this archive and index, researcher have an ideal basis for their studies on pedestrian dynamics. Own experiments have already been made publicly available [3]. Added ValueBearbeiten
