Prä-registrierte, transparente und reproduzierbare Forschung: Warum manchen Menschen Politik Freude bereitet und anderen nicht BearbeitenProjektbeschreibung BearbeitenOften, citizens talk or read about politics solely for the pleasure they derive from these activities. Yet, existing theories struggle to explain why (some) individuals enjoy engaging with politics as an end in itself even when the behaviour does not produce any separable instrumental value. This study integrates multiple psychological theories from motivation studies to derive a need-based model of political motivation that helps to explain intrinsic political engagement. The model proposes that intrinsic political motivation has roots in the seemingly apolitical processes of need satisfaction which are deeply ingrained in the human psyche. Specifically, the degree of need-satisfaction experienced in ongoing and past political encounters is argued to predict both whether and how individuals engage with politics. By manipulating need-related situational features before and during the political engagement, a survey experiment will test the basic tenet that need-satisfying experiences with politics shape the quantity and quality of a person’s political engagement. Theoretically, this research contributes a new, yet untested theory for a crucial but unresolved political science question with practical implications for democratic societies. Methodologically, by sharing all underlying data and pre-registering the analytical code and hypotheses this research abides by the highest standards of open science and seeks to set a precedent of transparent research that may help to publicize and advance open science principles and practices within political science.
